Passport to Summer – Gap Camp

Dear parents,

Today was the last day of regular camp and we’re looking back on 6 weeks of summer fun. We finished the camp on a high note, with a show in which campers shared what they had done in their particular programs. The show took place in the theater and you’ll find a video below.

The next two weeks will be dedicated to Gap Camp. Gap Camp offers a rich and exciting program that promotes curiosity, develops skills, and offers engaging experiences to children ages 5 to 12. Campers will enjoy a variety of programs in a safe, fun, stimulating environment. Each day, campers have the opportunity to explore and develop a variety of skills, and children ages 6 to 12 go swimming twice a week. Fridays are party time with pizza, games, music, dancing and plain good fun! Contact the summer camp office for more information or to sign up.

We thank you for your continued support and hope to see you back, either during Gap Camp, or next year, for WIS Passport to Summer 2011!

Thunder storms – delayed dismissal

Parents,

Due to severe thunder storms in our area right now, our dismissal will most likely be slightly delayed. Please be patient as we move the campers safely around campus to get them ready to be dismissed. We thank you for your patience and cooperation.

Passport to Summer – week 6 (July 26-30)

Dear parents and campers,

Welcome to the sixth week of Passport to Summer!

Whether your children are new campers or have been in one of our programs before, there are many new things to explore, discover and learn during the upcoming week. Every week we focus on another part of the world and week 6 will take us to Europe. This will be the final week of our regular camp, but we’re still looking forward to two weeks of Gap Camp.

If you have not already done so, please take a look at our picture and video sections of the blog, to see what activities campers have been involved in during the past 5 weeks of camp. Also, information about scheduling, field trips and pool times can be found under the ‘registered campers’ tab. When you completed your registration you were given the password for this section of our website.

Finally, a few reminders:

  • Please take a minute to read an important message from our summer camp nurse concerning medications here.
  • When you pick up your child, please don’t forget to bring your pick-up pass. If you are in the carpool line, display the pass on the right hand side of your wind shield. It helps us tremendously if you clearly write your child(ren)’s name as well as the name of the teacher or the program they attend.
  • If you drop your child off later than usual (after a doctor’s appointment for example) or pick him/her up earlier, always check with the summer camp office (Middle School building) first, to check him/her in or out and obtain a pass.Teachers will not accept or release campers without a pass other than during regular drop-off and pick-up times.
  • Should you need to talk to the teacher, the best time to do this is in the morning between 8:30 and 8:45 AM.
  • In case of thunderstorms we keep all campers and staff indoors until the storm passes and this includes dismissal time. We will delay dismissal until it is safe to be outside again. Thanks for you patience and understanding.
  • Due to the high temperatures, high UV index and poor air quality we have limited outdoor activities. Campers are encouraged to drink plenty of fluids, will stay in air-conditioned rooms and will stay out of the sun, including the pool if necessary.
  • We have a lot of items in our lost and found box in the student center. Please take a moment to see if anything belongs to your child. We will discard all items in lost and found this Friday, July 30th when camp closes.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us!

Thanks and have a wonderful week.

Heat advisory

Parents:

Please note that there is a heat advisory in effect today, Friday July 23rd from noon to 9:00 pm. It is anticipated that the air quality index will reach Code Red status.

A heat advisory means that a period of hot temperatures is expected. The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will combine to create a situation in which heat related illnesses are possible.

Code Red status means that active children and adults, especially those with lung disease should avoid prolonged heavy exertion outdoors.

On days such as today, WIS Passport to Summer Students will be encouraged to drink plenty of fluids, will stay in air-conditioned rooms and will stay out of the sun, including the pool.

For more information about heat advisories, please check www.weather.gov, website of the the National Weather Service.

Tips to stay healthy in the heat:

  • Drink more fluids
  • Don’t drink fluids that contain alcohol, caffeine or large amounts of sugar
  • Stay indoors, and if possible, stay in air conditioned space
  • Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing
  • NEVER leave anyone or any pet in a closed, parked vehicle
  • Check on: infants, children, elderly, people with disabilities and those who are physically ill
  • Limit your outdoor activity to morning and evening hours
  • Cut down on exercise
  • Stay in the shade; wear sunglasses, sunscreen and a wide-brimmed hat

Lost and found

Parents,

Our collection of items left behind in the student center (towels, bags, lunch boxes etc.) is rapidly growing. When you drop off your child in the morning, please take a moment to see if anything belongs to your child and take it home. Items still left behind at the end of next week will be discarded.

Welcome to Passport to Summer week 3

Dear parents,

Welcome to the third week of Passport to Summer!

Please remember that camp is closed on Monday the 5th, because of the 4th of July! We resume our programs on Tuesday, July 6th. New campers, please follow Monday procedures. Also, don’t forget to check the pool schedule under the registered campers tab.

This week, CIT’s will be wrapping up their three-week course. We hope that we once again are looking at a successful group of future counselors. Many of their predecessors have returned to WIS and are part of our camp staff today.

Another program we would like to mention is our ESL program, which starts this week. International students participating in this program will have a chance to (further) develop their English language skills. Campers will also have the opportunity to connect with people from many different countries and together explore a bit of American life and culture.

Finally, a few reminders:

  • Please take a minute to read an important message from our summer camp nurse concerning medications here.
